Ugandan nanny jailed for four years after video shows her viciously abusing toddler in her care

Jolly Tumuhiirwe, 22, in court last week The Ugandan nanny caught on camera horrifically abusing a toddler under her care has been jailed for four years. Jolly Tumuhiirwe, 22, pleaded guilty last week to assaulting the 18-month-old child in her care. The abuse was uncovered by the girl’s father, Eric Kamanzi, when he secretly installed a camera in his living room after noticing his young daughter was subdued and bruised. Shocking footage – later viewed by the court – showed Tumuhiirwe hitting the child viciously, throwing her on to the stone floor and then pressing her foot down on her small body. Mr Kamanzi uploaded the footage to Facebook, where it was shared by a friend, before going viral. It has now been viewed almost 30 million times, provoking a widespread debate about the state of childcare in Uganda. Tumuhiirwe claimed in court she had abused the child because she had been beaten by the girl’s mother. The case has led to calls for greater childcare

Nigerian oil workers go on strike

Black marketers wooing intending customer Nigeria's two main oil workers' unions have begun a nationwide strike, threatening to hurt the output of Africa's largest oil producer.   BBC reporters say long queues have formed at many petrol stations. The unions, Pengassan and Nupeng, said the strike would continue until the government addressed its concerns. These include the adoption of the delayed Petroleum Industry Bill, aimed at overhauling the sector and maintenance work on oil refineries.

Central Sydney Is in Lockdown Amid a Developing Hostage Crisis

Heavily armed police fanned out across downtown Sydney on Monday after an unidentified man took an undisclosed number of people hostage at a café in the central business district of Australia’s largest city at around 9:45 am local time. The flag, which is commonly flown by Islamist terrorist groups, has sparked fears that a terrorist attack is unfolding. However, Sydney police have not said if it is a terrorist attack but confirm they have made contact with the perpetrator. The flag bore, in Arabic text, what was thought to be the shahada, or Muslim testimony of faith. It translates as, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”Hostages were seen displaying a black and white flag in the window of the Lindt café in Martin Place — a major commercial precinct usually crowded with office workers and tourists and, at this time of year, Christmas shoppers.

Obasanjo's Aide releases Fayose's Letter begging for forgiveness in 2012

Fayose’s Letter: “Dear Baba, “There is no denying the fact that my relationship with you has gone sour as a result of my action and inaction which have definitely caused you embarrassment in public and this has marred our very good father-son relationship in the past. “I take responsibility for my over reaction and disrespect to your person which is most regretted, I am indeed sorry. “I pray that God will give you the grace to let go of the past knowing fully well that I am human and therefore not infallible especially considering the circumstances surrounding my removal from office. “To further buttress my willingness to seek peace with you, I could recall that I had made several efforts to this effect by consulting your close allies in the persons of Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), Chief Omilani and Pastor Oyedepo amongst others. “Lastly, kindly disregard all insinuations or political blackmailing suggestive of my doing or saying anything contradicting my present disposition as cont

Clinton to address forum sponsored by Israeli billionaire

Haim Saban (L) pledged last year to support Clinton should she run for president. Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton will address a forum about US-Israeli relationships sponsored by Israeli billionaire Haim Saban. The Saban Forum in Washington is an annual event organized by the Brookings Institution, The Hill reported on Monday. The Israeli mega-donor is a major political donor, who pledged last year to support Clinton should she run for the next presidential election. “I hope she will run. She would be a wonderful president,” Saban said. US Secretary of State John Kerry and Vice President Joe Biden will also be among the participants of the forum.

Ebola Update

The head of the UN Ebola response mission in West Africa has told the BBC there is still a "huge risk" the deadly disease could spread to other parts of the world. Tony Banbury declined to say if targets he had set in the fight against Ebola, to be achieved by Monday, had been met. The targets were for the proportion of people being treated and for the safe burial of highly infectious bodies. The UN boss was speaking in Freetown, one of the worst-affected areas. On Sunday in Sierra Leone's capital, bulldozers were clearing large areas for a new burial ground. At the clearance site, near a rubbish tip, car after car was arriving with bodies, and several hundred workers were digging graves.

The next Google Glass will be powered by Intel

The first model might not even be on sale, but the next version of Google Glass will haveIntel inside. That's according to the WSJ , who's heard from people familiar with the matter that it will apparently form yet another part of the chipmakers continued push into wearables -- in case you hadn't heard about that before . Intel didn't quite manage to tap into the smartphone boom, with chips licensed from its rival, ARM, powering the majority of smartphones. It took until last year for Intel to finally offer a smartphone processor that could connect to 4G LTE networks. Further still, Intel aims to promoteGlass in a work capacity, pitching to hospitals and manufacturing businesses. However, but more importantly than the deal-making itself, we're still waiting to hear how Glass itself will benefit from the new hardware. Neither Intel or Google have responded to the report.

Microsoft acquires email startup Acompli

After accidentally leaking its plans, Microsoft has now confirmed it's buying email startup Acompli for an undisclosed sum. The company came to prominence thanks to its synonymous app for Android and iOS, which we reviewed favorably earlier this year. Acompli probably caught Microsoft's attention with extensive support for the company's Exchange servers. Although limited Exchange email and calendar compatibility is cooked into both Google and Apple's mobile OSes, Acompli handles tasks like creating events, responding to invites, and managing contacts more like Microsoft's Outlook than a third-party app. As such, an acquisition makes sense -- Microsoft could choose to either relabel the app "Outlook Mobile" or something similar, or use it as the foundation for a new Outlook app for iOS and Android. If you want to see what the fuss is about before Microsoft decides what it wants to do with it, the app is already available as a free download for Android and

The world on RACISM

Chris Rock has some thoughts on race relations in America: they’re a myth. In a wide-ranging cover interview with New York Magazine ’s Frank Rich, the comedian and film director addressed race in the Obama era saying, “when we talk about race relations in America or racial progress, it’s all nonsense.” Rock continues, “There are no race relations. White people were crazy. Now they’re not as crazy. To say that black people have made progress would be to say they deserve what happened to them before.”

Russia's Currency Has Worst Fall Since 1998 as Oil Rout Continues

The dollar surged nearly 4% against the ruble Monday as the ongoing rout in world oil prices sent the Russian currency spiraling. The move was the ruble’s biggest one-day fall since 1998, when another (much bigger) collapse in oil prices led the country to default on its domestic debt. The dollar, which bought 33 rubles at the start of the year, surged past 50 for the first time ever, touching a new all-time high of 52.66 before retreating fractionally. That mirrored a fresh slump in oil prices during Asian trading, which sent benchmark crude futures to their lowest levels since May 2009.
